Let’s clarify what house hacking is: It's a real estate strategy where you purchase a property, live in a portion, and rent out the rest to cover housing expenses. This could involve renting out a duplex, a room in your home, or even a basement.

My Non-Traditional House Hacking Approach

You might be wondering about my take on house hacking. By the end of September 2025, I had rental properties in two states and decided to relocate to a more affordable area in Southern California, where I live. This decision led me to a larger home through an innovative non-traditional house hack: renting my primary residence and moving in with my oldest son. Together, we found an incredible home with ample space at a fraction of my previous expenses. This allowed me to add a third rental property to my portfolio in three different states. 

What Could or Would You Do?

Before my current situation, I rented out rooms to student exchange visitors, which supplemented my income nicely. What is something you could creatively do, today, to minimize your expenses, increase cash flow, and expedite your real estate investing?
